About Us

Herald builds digital infrastructure for commercial insurance. Today we provide developers a single API to get quotes for insurance products from multiple carriers. Tomorrow we want to build anything that helps developers connect their applications to the insurance ecosystem. We think buying insurance should be as easy as buying anything else online and we want your help!

We’re a team of insurtech veterans with experience at At-Bay, Kin, Semsee, and Insurify. We’ve raised over $8M in seed funding from top-tier VCs (Lightspeed, Afore, Underscore) along with a panel of insurtech founders (At-Bay, Marble), insurance executives (CRC), and early employees of other successful API infrastructure companies (Plaid, Alloy, Stytch).

The Role

We’re looking for a DevSecOps Engineer to join our team as our first dedicated DevOps / Infrastructure engineer. In this role you will help us evolve our SDLC while championing quality for security and operational standards. You will help us scale our infrastructure 10x, and prepare us for the next set of challenges, keeping in mind best Software Engineering, DevOps and Security principles. This role will involve helping us architect our cloud infrastructure, observability, and data stacks. You will also be responsible for security and compliance, including monitoring and engaging with customer procurement processes under the guidance of our CTO.

Today, we’re a Typescript / NodeJS ecosystem, primarily using a NestJS monorepo, with Prisma and PostgreSQL, managed via Heroku, using GitHub Actions for CI, and various telemetry / monitoring / alerting tools. We’re looking for someone to help us improve the current quality of our stack, and take us through any inflection points for when it’s time to level up. An ideal candidate has managed complex migrations to Kubernetes or similar, while managing multiple geolocals and security considerations.

You’re a good fit for this role if you’ve:

  • Worked as or performed core SWE work
  • Been a part of DevOps, SRE, or Infrastructure teams
  • Executed on security initiatives
  • Been a part of a major “level up” or infra migration at a previous company

Responsibilities

  • Being a subject matter expert on all things infrastructure and DevOps
  • Identify gaps, design solutions, and rollout various supporting tools and pieces of infrastructure, including observability, logging, release processes, and anything else you believe we need
  • Working closely with our CTO and staff engineers to define and maintain our best possible SDLC process and build supporting elements
  • Hop in the trenches and help the rest of the engineering team and help us work on projects from time-to-time
  • Growing your security expertise into full ownership of our monitoring, testing, questionnaires, and more

What you bring

  • 4+ years of experience as a technologist, SWE, DevOps, or related
  • 2+ recent years within DevOps, DevSecOps, SRE, or similar roles
  • Comprehensive knowledge and expertise within a variety of DevSecOps toolkits, such as CI/CD tools, cloud management platforms, Kubernetes/Helm, deep Git-Fu, and core knowledge of the SDLC
  • Familiarity with information security standards and frameworks (SOC2, etc)
  • Knowledge of DevOps automation and IaC principles
  • Familiarity with API security
  • Opinionation and a strong sense of how to do things right
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for learning new skills on the job!
  • Passion for building things from the ground up
  • Dedication to the creation of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment. We’re building a community that cherishes unique perspectives and creates the conditions for every team member to thrive.

What we bring

  • 📈 Company equity
  • 🌐 Hybrid-flexible company focussed in the Northeast (NYC and Boston)

Life at Herald

We're just getting started and building our culture with purpose every day. One of the joys of joining a small company early is that you get to build that culture too. Come join us and help us make Herald an (even more) amazing place to work!

Actions we value

There are many actions that we hope for and even demand from members of our team: communicating honestly, working hard, behaving with integrity. These are expectations. But we value these five actions above and beyond the level of "baseline expectation." We believe that if we excel at these, our business will thrive. We’re betting the company on it.

Create a shared reality.

We each articulate the facts, assumptions, questions, and fears we hold about our business. We listen to and learn from others. We create a shared set of information before making decisions.

Get better every day.

We constantly seek ways to improve ourselves. We provide each other candid feedback coupled with support to elevate those around us. We refine how we work together to become more effective as a team.

Respect one another.

Our actions impact real people with distinct lives. We take the time to understand their perspectives and act in accordance with their humanity.

Build a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community.

We thrive when our team has a variety of lived experiences, values each other for their unique perspectives, and shares equitably in our mutual success. We invest in building an inclusive community for people who are oppressed because of their race, ethnicity, age, religion, gender expression, sexual orientation, physical ability, or socio-economic class.

(Remember that) we make the rules.

We once created the ways we work and therefore can change them. We do not default to momentum. We challenge ourselves to deconstruct the status quo and create a better future.
